Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel says “we’re dealing with the situation very professionally. There were no bad words between either party.”
Schalke had long been trying to sign the 22-year-old Meyer to a longer deal, but he follows Leon Goretzka - who is going to Bayern Munich - Sead Kolasinac and Joel Matip in leaving without any financial recompense to the club.
Meyer joined Schalke as a youth in 2009 and made steady progress. He scored 22 goals and set up 24 more in 192 competitive games.
Meyer has made four appearances for Germany.
